Before like hundred years ago, there was no recorder for the movies. With the invention of camera, art dives into a vast ocean full of treasures waiting to be found. Showing emotions instead of writing and describe it much more efficient for most of the people. After the first film, rate of reading has dramatically decreased.
Recording music is way older than recording a film. So even in the first films it is possible to hear music. We all loved to hear very classic songs in the film of Charlie Chaplin, who is almost first world wide loved actor.
Technology never stops. Art follows it. Human, gradually searching new ways of describing itself. Since it is impossible to find a perfect way, it seems we will try it forever thou. But it is not important. People will try!
So, to start thinking what kind of sound a film needs, one must know what is the movie about. Of course I am not talking about the scenario. What director aims to say or do is very important. Some movies about action or comedy is also important for the composer.
Do not forget that there is not a way to perfectly describe a feeling or emotion by sound intercultural. Sound is like a habit. So the first thing to do before
Of course with the rise of the communitaciton the people of our era started to create a new life style for everyone. We can clearly say that there is a new and worldwide culture right now. So unless we confirmed in another way we should think of that culture unfortunately.
Hopefully, we know that culture profoundly and there are a lot of people around to practise. Do not forget it is impossible to find a solid note or rhythm for everybody. Instead we can try to make people in the film. I am not saying, of course, if there are no music, people going out of the mood. I think it is easier to not use music than create a new music or sound for the film. Without music, life will flow naturally. So it is no problem for the audience. But when you put music, some people will distract. So the aim should keep people in the film.
So using different kind of sounds is critical. But the most important thing is creating deep sound. If you can create a nice deep sound your work will be easier. I mean silence is not the best back sound. Silence should be used in some science, of course, but for all movie, listen to me and first create a deep sound which have nice bass sound. How much bass is very important as well. Basses are beautiful, but some people have trouble to endure too much. So the bass level of film should fit the length of the film. If the movie too long does not try to build a large bass sound. But if you composing for a short film, you can be more brave about that. Last thing for the use of bass, waves must be long. Otherwise sound would be headexer.
Then, you should check the colors in the film. And if there is no sound playing in your mind automatically you should try instruments and electrical sounds. If you have questions about it, it means it is wrong. If you have feeling to ask someone, it means your music is not finished yet.
And there is something very important. Do not get bored. If you do, your music can destroy a movie. You can ask about everything on short film music composing, or movie themes. Take care for now.
